I was on the Red Hot Breakfast Show on Hot FM Zambia this morning, talking about How the International Monetary Fund Strangles Africa, the book I have written with Vijay Prashad and which Inkani Books publishes this week.
We covered the Fund’s long history on the continent, Zambia’s own debt story, and the question that runs through the book: why African countries keep returning to Washington, decade after decade, for a treatment that never seems to cure. We also got into the African Centre for Monetary Studies, the institution African central banks built for themselves in 1978 and could not afford to keep — a story almost nobody knows, and one that tells you a great deal about why the alternatives never took root.
The full conversation runs just under an hour and is below.
If you are in Johannesburg or Lusaka this week, the book launches at The Forge on 6 August at 6pm and at the Lusaka Contemporary Art Centre on 8 August at 14:00hrs. It would be good to see you at either.
